Record ratings. And cancelled forest trips
So, I've bought loads of cd's lately. For the first time in over a year. Am I the only one being terrible at explaining why I like a certain record or artist? Anyhow, these are the records I've gotten since I moved up north, with some preliminary ratings: ( The Awesome )( The good )( The ok )( The boring )Either I'm way too easy to please, or I'm really good at buying records. Oh, and moving away from Lund is turning me into some kind of indie popster. Strange. Hopefully, the Totalt Jävla Mörker (that's Total Fucking Darkness in english) punk/hc/grind concert on Saturday will change all of that. Todays forest trip was apparently cancelled. Or, the word was something like voluntary. Good for me, who decided to oversleep when it was pouring down when we were supposed to leave. | | Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006 | | 9:57 pm |
Obscure records, chicken-eating kittens and campfires in the frozen north
Got a couple of records today, from hyped2death. The Homosexuals 3cd-collection with loads of liner notes and a manifesto (why don't bands make manifestos anymore?) and 80 amazing songs. And a collection of british DIY postpunk from late 70's/early 80's. Ínteresting. More interesting than amazing, I think. At least most of the stuff. But still, (re)releasing loads of unknown stuff people made in home studios is something I like to support. Now if I can only remember the name of the record company that makes compilations of punk/new wave/hc from Iran, Uzbekistan and other former Soviet republics. We wrote haikus in school today. Not exactly my kind of writing. To put it mildly. And tomorrow we're supposed to be out in the forest the whole day. And sit around the campfire making hot dogs. In October. In northern Sweden. It's cold. And grey. And it's been raining the last couple of days. Oh joy. And my girlfriend is exchanging her flatmate for a kitten. Good choice. I think. Not that I've ever met the flatmate. But kittens are nice. Except for the one we have here. Who ate my almost defrosted chicken tonight. Leaving me with, I don't know, noodles and pita bread. And now I'm going to be thrown out of the school building. Closing time. Oh, well, I suppose I have better things to do anyway. | | Monday, October 2nd, 2006 | | 1:26 pm |
Update and stuff
So, first update in four months. I'm living outside Storvik, a ridiculously small town an hour from anything resembling civilization ( Gävle, the city most known for the Gävle goat). I'm taking a one-year course in creative writing, which is quite nice. A bit discouraging that my girlfriend is still in Lund, about 8 hours away. At least. And we don't have internet access in our rooms. Gah. Just a couple of communal computers. But it has at least one upside, my eBay purchases have dwindled away into nothingness. And the right-wing coalition won the election. By making the social democrats going right-wing approach even better than the social democrats. And our right-wing populists were more succesfull than ever. Not in the parliament yet, but they gained lots of seats in local elections. And the politicians still think ignoring them will make them go away. Wishful thinking is nice, but the only effect it has is giving the populists an open goal by not challenging them at all... Other than that, I've been buying lots of records and avoiding customs fees. Thus far. And I've been pleasantly surprised by the number of Thai, Indian and Arabic stores in Gävle. More than in Lund, strangely enough. On the other hand, not a single interesting pub/club/whatever. Just some DIY gigs about once a month, where all the local punk/hc kids go. | | Wednesday, June 14th, 2006 | | 8:43 pm |
Thoughts on the WC groups after the first round of games
Group A: None of the teams really impressed in the first round, and in theory it's still a somewhat open group. That could get change in about two hours, though. Both Poland and Costa Rica will have to win their games to have any chance of going through, and I feel Poland has the slightly better chance of the two. Still, Germany and Ecuador will probably go through tonight and tomorrow, and battle it out for first place. Group B: Another group were none of the teams impressed (except T&T, but they don't have a chance of going through). England will almost assuredly seal their place in the last 16 tomorrow, leaving Sweden and Paraguay to fight for second. Paraguay will probably have to beat the Swedes, and I think they will do that. Group C: I don't really see either Argentina or Holland slip up in this group. Ivory Coast have a decent chance against the Dutch, but Argentina ought to beat Serbia, who were a real letdown against Holland. Group D: Portugal and Mexico will go through. Nothing more to add here. Group E: The Czechs and the Italians look set for the next round after initial wins, but could struggle somewhat in their next game. The Czechs will have to do withhout Baros and Koller, and Lokvenc isn't nearly the same quality as those two. The Italians didn't look entirely convincing against Ghana, and might have some trouble with the US, if they get their aggresive pressure and quick play going this time. Still, if Ghana or USA go through now, it'd be a major upset. Group F: Japan gave their chances of qualifying away against Australia. Brazil will take first place, despite having two lazy, uninterested strikers in Adriano and Ronaldo. The match between Croatia and Australia decides second place, with the Croatians being the favorites to go through. Group G: South Korea looked nowhere near the form of the last world cup, while France were exactly as good as they were in 2002. Wide open, although Togo will struggle. The solid but boring Swiss will probably make it, and right now I'd place the Koreans above France. Still, if the French get their game going, they should be able to win the group easily. Then again, they haven't played a good tournament game since the Euro 2000 final... Group H: Spain wins it. Ukraine, despite a wretched performance today, will take second place. Four points against Tunisia and Saundi Arabia should see them through, and they really ought to win both games. Time to watch Germany - Poland. My prediction: 3-1. | | Saturday, June 10th, 2006 | | 8:07 pm |
Oh dear lord, that was embarrassing...
So, eh. 0-0 against Trinidad & Tobago. Make that Trinidad & Tobago with only 10 men for the whole second half. As usual, we're having all the trouble in the world converting our chances. Their keeper was really good on the chances we had, though, and we probably should have scored at least one goal. But, still. 0-0 against Trinidad & Tobago. Haha. Hopefully Källström will start against Paraguay instead of Svensson, and I think I'd prefer Jonson over Wilhelmsson as right winger (and what on earth was up with Wilhelmsson's haircut???). There's some comfort in the fact that both England and Paraguay were as bad, if not even worse, than we were (especially Paraguay), and we'll probably go through if we beat Paraguay. Why does every England game look the same, and how can so many good players play that uninspiring? The teams in group A were even poorer than the teams playing today. Do the German defenders have a valid reason to be in the team at all (except Lahm)? Their performance has to be the crappiest by a German defence ever. And please, let's not talk about Poland. Why are they here instead of Denmark, Turkey, Ireland or any other good European team? Oh yes, they qualified from England's excuse for a group. But Argentina - Ivory Coast ought to be interesting, as well as the rest of the games in group C. I have a feeling that Serbia will beat Holland tomorrow and go through together with Argentina. It's their strongest team since Yugoslavia was still one country, probably on par with the Croatian team from '98, but without the kind of flair players that team had. A real update (without any memes)
More posts in one day than in three months. Yay for me. I've finally finished my paper (or whatever the english word is. The 40+ page things you'll have to write for half a semester or more) about the Swedish national youth movement and modernity during the 30's. And after much arguing about the meaning of the word finished with the people who grant student loans, I'll actually get some money as well. Swell. Our poor kitten was castrated yesterday, and now he has to wear this silly-looking headpiece to prevent him from licking the wound. He sure looks displeased and depressed with the situation, but hopefully we'll be able to remove it in a couple of days. bas_lag posted a link to an excellent article about China Mieville and politics in fantasy the other day. The article is at http://www.nplusonemag.com/mieville.htmlAnd hooray for Barcelona. | | 2:02 am |

And in the last episode the Swedish Mafia from the future pays a visit (with swedish-speaking american actors)! |

Music meme from last.fm
Just did this one at last.fm, and I might as well post it here, too. Go to the music player of your choice and put it on shuffle. Say the following questions aloud and press play. Well, I'm back in school. Managed to stay out of it for a whole three months, but when I got to try out a telemarketing job, I quickly realized the error of my ways, and decided to return to my studies. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that I'm probably the worst salesman ever, but it only took me an hour to find out and walk out on the job... And the anthropology is interesting, especially compared to the history studies I've tried to get through with the last year. The whole atheoretical (or antitheoretical), faux-objective "wie es eigentlich gewesen ist" stance of the history department is really tiring. Not to mention what seems to be their approach to inventive research; digging deeper into the local archives than anyone has done before, find and describe some historical event that's so insignificant that no-one's even bothered to write about it before, and you'll end up with a pioneering work of historical research. If someone's written the exact same work about a neighboring town, family, or whatever, your work is of course still pioneering and all that. The way to salvation is obviously to document every single event in the history of man, preferably with as little contextualizing and theorizing as possible. And the course I'm taking right now, about world systems theory, global systems and the discourse of globalization as an elite phenomenon is the exact opposite. Nothing spectacularly new, baffling or eye-opening, but it's interesting and inspiring. And the connection between local/global and particular/universal is of course at the centre of the whole thing, which is kind of refreshing after struggling through a year of extreme particularism. And Lund is still The City Where Nothing Ever Happens. You'd think that a city with 30000 students (I think) would manage to come up with something interesting, but that's definitely not the case. I mean, what does all the students that are not into going out to a nation, getting drunk and listen to crappy music do with their lives? Of course, there's a nation where people get drunk and discuss who is most Marxist, and one where you can discuss who is most indie. Whee. And there was much rejoicing... First post
So, I got myself an LJ account. Not really sure what I'm gonna do with it, but I was thinking something in the line of writing words of profound, infinite wisdom. Or, well, I suppose that the infinite wisdom can be put on hold for a while. This week is National Games Week here in Sweden, and today our gaming group is supposed to host an introduction to German board games. So far no one has showed up, but I suppose it can only get better. And tomorrow it's back to the job-searching routine. At least it's better than having loads (well, there were never that many classes, more like twice/week) of dull history classes to go to. Oh, and I just watched the Luca Turilli video "Ancient forest of elves". Wow. I'm in awe. Total awe (could be shock, really. Kind of refreshing with someone who's never heard words like detachment, dissociation and distance (or you could substitute these for shame and cheese if you'd like). Lengthy guitar solos, swords, plastic crowns, castles, dead serious violin players, mysterious men in black cloaks uttering important prophesies, and Mr Turilli himself shooting down the moon with his sword (after being crowned in the afore-mentioned castle, of course).
